Diane Schuur Information
Diane Joan Schuur (December 10, 1953) is an American jazz singer and pianist dubbed with the nicknamed “Deedles.” As an infant, Schuur had premature complications when she was just two months, which resulted in a total loss of vision. Even after facing these issues, she first learned to play the piano by ear. Schuur was born in Tacoma, Washington, and began singing music when she was only three years old. At 13, she began to love and appreciate jazz and had a Duke Ellington record collection.
Schuur was taken to Lake Tahoe by her father for the audition as a lounge singer at the hotel and casino of Harrah when she was just 15 years old. She signed her first record deal with the GRP label. Under the label, Schuur released her first album entitled “Deedles” that met significant success. The album reached number 35 on the Billboard jazz charts and was released internationally.
Schuur’s next album, entitled Schuur Thing, was released in 1985, featuring guest artist Jose Feliciano. The album reached number 10 on the Billboard jazz charts. Schuur later received an invitation to perform at the 28th Annual Grammy Awards Shows.
Schuur’s notable discography includes a massive list of albums including Timeless (1986), Diana Schuur & the Count Basie Orchestra (1987), Talkin’ Bout You (1988), A GRP Christmas Collection (1988), Diana Schuur Collection (1989), In Tribute (1992), and several others.
