Des Moines Symphony Orchestra Information
The Des Moines Symphony Orchestra is a premier arts organization in Iowa and the Midwest. The Des Moines Symphony Association aims to play excellent symphonic music to enrich, educate, and inspire our community.
Since 1989, the Orchestra has acquired a national reputation as one of the country's finest orchestras, performing a series of Masterworks, Pops, Family, and Education Concerts and performing for special occasions under the direction of Music Director Joseph Giunta.
The Des Moines Symphony Academy was founded in 2003, making it one of only four American orchestras to fund an Academy of Music as an intrinsic component of its primary mission. Together, the Symphony and Academy are now Iowa's largest employer of professional performers.
The Symphony is the main resident company of the Des Moines Civic Center, which has a capacity of 2,662 seats and is known for its acoustics. The great pieces of the orchestral repertory and collaborations with some of the world's most notable soloists and artists have been performed there during its regular season of seven pairs of Masterworks concerts.
The Des Moines Symphony's annual Yankee Doodle Pops concert on the grounds of the Iowa State Capitol in July draws more than 100,000 people, making it the greatest single-day attendance of any concert event in the state.
