Defeated Sanity Information
Founded in 1993 by guitarist Wolfgang Teske and his son, drummer Lille Gruber, Defeated Sanity is a technical death metal band hailing from Dachsbach, Bavaria, Germany. Gruber (drums), Josh Welshman (vocals), and Jacob Schmidt make up the current lineup (bass guitar). The band's signature sound is a violent, abrasive, and complicated death metal that retains hints of jazz fusion. Progressive death metal has been another label used to Defeated Sanity's sound.
Prelude to the Tragedy, Psalms of the Moribund, Chapters of Repugnance, and The Sanguinary Impetus are some of the studio albums to date. The band has also put out a plethora of singles, EPs, demos, and splits. They take a lot of cues from American extreme metal bands like Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation for their sound.
As the band puts it, "a split with ourselves," Defeated Sanity's 2016 record Disposal of the Dead / Dharmata features two EP-length parts in which the band plays two distinct styles. Dharmata is "an homage to old school progressive death metal," evocative of bands like Death and early Pestilence, while Disposal of the Dead showcases their distinctive harsh and technical style. Jazz is also heavily influenced.
