Deafheaven broke new ground in metal with their groundbreaking record, Sunbather, mixing black metal, shoegaze, and post-rock to create a harsh and beautiful sound. The band's willingness to go against the metal rules by replacing blast beats with ethereal passages and screams with cinematic crescendos won them praise from critics and a loyal fan base. They were one of the most important bands in the modern metal scene because they were always pushing the limits of their style.
When Infinite Granite emerged in 2021, it marked a big change in Deafheaven's style. They started using clean voices and dreamlike sounds. Some fans were surprised by the move, but it won over new friends and showed the band's creativity without fear. They went on many tours in 2023 and 2024, playing Sunbather in its entirety to mark the album's 10th anniversary and mixing older songs with the lush sounds of their newer work.
Deafheaven is set to release a new record in 2025. It is said to combine their heavier roots with more melodic sounds of late. They have already announced that they will play at Roadburn and Primavera Sound festivals, and a headlining world tour is likely to follow. Even though they are always changing, Deafheaven is still at the top of experimental metal.
