David Nelson Band Information
David Nelson (June 12, 1943) is an American singer, musician, and songwriter. He was born in Seattle, Washington. Nelson began his career as a Jerry Garcia and the Wildwood Boys member, playing folk and bluegrass. When Nelson's friend and former bandmate started playing rock music with The Warlocks (later renamed the Grateful Dead), he quickly joined the similarly-minded New Delhi River Band.
Late in 1966, the New Delhi River Band was widely recognized as the house band of The Barn in Scotts Valley, California, despite lacking the acumen of the Grateful Dead and choosing to remain in East Palo Alto, California, instead of moving to the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. By the time they broke up in early 1968, the group had amassed a sizable cult following in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties that had begun during the Summer of Love.
Nelson was approached by Jesse McReynolds, who was recording an album of Grateful Dead covers in Nashville that summer of 2006, and requested to contribute. In addition to the three Grateful Dead albums (Aoxomoxoa, Workingman's Dead, and American Beauty), Nelson has contributed to various other artists' discographies as a guest artist.
