David Helfgott Information
David Helfgott (May 19, 1947) is an Australian concert pianist. He won the state finals of the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition. While studying at the Royal College of Music, he was honored with the Dannreuther Prize for Best Concerto Performance and the Marmaduke Barton Prize.
The 1996 film Shine followed Helfgott as he came of age and fought his battle with mental illness. Helfgott was played by Geoffrey Rush (adult), Noah Taylor (teen), and Alex Rafalowicz (child). Shine and the biography by Gillian Helfgott have been called "all blatant lies" by his brother Les. Peter Helfgott, David's first wife, was "very harshly mistreated," according to Clare Papp.
The symptoms of his schizoaffective illness were increasingly obvious throughout his time in London. In 1970, he relocated back to Perth. He wed Clare Papp, a Jewish immigrant from Hungary who already had four children the following year. Helfgott is most at home while playing Romantic music by composers like Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, and Rimsky-Korsakov.
