Dave Stryker Information
Dave Stryker (March 30, 1957) is an American jazz guitarist. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Stryker was inspired by the Beatles when he was just ten years old. The Beatles inspired him enough that he began playing guitar. He had become a jazz guitarist in Omaha by the age of 17. Stryker moved to Los Angeles in 1978 to learn advanced level guitar skills from another Omaha native Billy Rogers.
Stryker toured with McDuff after moving to New York City in 1984-85. There he spent almost ten years with saxophonist Standley Turrentine. Stryker formed a trio with Tony Reedus and Jared Gold and later, a band with Steve Slagle. He has worked as well as toured with Kevin Mahogany. He has also worked with Andy LaVerne, Javon Jackson, and Eliane Elias.
Stryker also teaches jazz guitar at Indiana University and Montclair State University as well as at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, The Veneto/New School Workshop in Italy, and the Litchfield Jazz Camp. He also began teaching online jazz guitar through the ArtistWorks website that was created to provide music education. Stryker has won the Top Ten Guitarists, Down Beat magazine Readers’ Poll in 2001 and Rising Star, Down Beat magazine Critics’ Poll.
As a leader, Stryker has released several studio albums throughout his career. Some of them are Strike Zone (1990), Guitar on Top (1991), Passage (1991), Blue Degrees (1992), Full Moon (1993), Nomad (1994), Blue to the Bone (1996), Shades of Miles (1998), Six String Santa (2005), and several others.
