Daryl Davis (March 26, 1958) is an American R&B, bandleader, actor, author, activist, and blues musician born in Chicago, Illinois. While performing, Davis has an energetic boogie-woogie piano style, even playing with big-name musicians such as Bruce Hornsby, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Chuck Berry. Davis is the focus of a documentary that came out in 2016 entitled “Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America.”
Davis absorbed the unique style of blues musicians from the Mississippi Delta. He received his bachelor of music degree in 1980 from Howard University, and while studying in the university, Davis was a member of the Howard University Choir and Jazz Vocal Ensemble. Legendary pianists Johnnie Johnson and Pinetop Perkins were known as mentors of Davis. Both were claiming Davis as their godson and praised his ability to master the popular piano style even before he was born.
As an actor, Davis has performed on stage, television, and film. He played a minor role in “The Wire,” a popular HBO television series. He has also appeared on stage with The Time of Your Life of William Saroyan with Marcia Gay Harden, Richard Bauer, and Brigid Cleary. Davis participated in Elvis Mania at an off-Broadway theatre in New York City. He received glowing reviews for his role in Polk Country of Zohra Neal Hurston. Davis has released a few notable studio albums such as American Roots (2000), Alternate Routes (2005), and Greatest Hits (2011).
