Shawntae Harris-Dupart (April 14, 1974) is an American rapper born in Chicago, Illinois. In '92, she signed with So So Def Records and officially launched her career. Her platinum-certified first album, Funkdafied (1994), was the first by a female solo rap act and the second by a female rap act (solo or group) overall, behind Salt-N-Pepa. Both "Funkdafied" (1994) and "Not Tonight" (1997), both recorded in the first half of her career, peaked in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100.
Da Brat's breakthrough came when, in 1992, she won first place at a Yo! MTV Raps-hosted local rap contest. A meeting with the young rap duo Kris Kross was the prize. She was signed to the So So Def label thanks to its producer Jermaine Dupri's recommendation. Funkdafied, her first studio album, debuted at 11 on the Billboard rap albums list when it was released in '94. The album was certified platinum, which made her the first female rapper to achieve that milestone.
Single "Ghetto Love" featuring T-Boz of TLC was released on Da Brat's 1996 LP Anuthatantrum, her second full-length release. Throughout the rest of the '90s, Da Brat's "featured" appearances on the albums of other rappers and R&B singers became more well-known than her solo work.
