Chubby Checker Information
Chubby Checker (October 3, 1941) is a rock 'n roll singer and dancer from Spring Gully, South Carolina. He was born Ernest Evans and raised in the projects of South Philadelphia. Checker founded a street-corner harmony group when he was only 8. He began taking piano lessons at Settlement Music School by the time he started high school. Checker used to entertain his classmates by performing vocal impressions of popular entertainers, including Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Fats Domino.
Chubby Checker recorded a novelty single for American Bandstand host Dick Clark. The song was released as a Christmas greeting by Clark, and luckily, it received a positive response. Soon Checker was to Cameo-Parkway and released his first single entitled "The Class."
Some of the other hit released by Checker is "Whole Lotta Laughin'" 1959, "The Twist" 1960, "Good, Good Lovin'," "Let's Twist Again," "Jingle Bell Rock" 1961, "Dancin' Party" 1962, "Let's Limbo Some More," "What Do Ya Say!" 1963, "Everything's Wrong," and "You Just Don't Know (What You Do To Me)" 1965.
Checker earned the title of the biggest chart hit by Billboard magazine for "The Twist." He was also honored by Settlement Music School and named on the Settlement 100, a list of notable people connected to the school. Checker also earned the prestigious Sandy Hosey Lifetime Achievement Award and hosted the 2013 AMG Heritage Award.
