Christopher Scott Thile (February 20, 1981) is an American mandolinist, singer, songwriter, composer, and radio host. He is best known for his work with the progressivism acoustic trio Nickel Creek and the acoustic folk and progressive bluegrass quintet Punch Brothers.
Thile was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2012. His tenure as host of the radio variety show Live from Here began in 2016 and ended in 2020.
Nickel Creek's three founding members first crossed paths in 1989 while hanging out with their parents. They all went to That Pizza Place in Carlsbad, California, to hear weekly bluegrass performances. On December 31, 1993, they released Little Cowpoke as their debut album.
Nickel Creek and This Side were later albums that achieved platinum and Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy wins, respectively. Why Should the Fire Die? Nickel Creek's 2005 release was well-received by critics and sold 250,000 copies.
Thile has written, composed, performed, and played every instrument on his solo albums, including Not All Who Wander Are Lost (2001) and Deceiver (2004). With bassist Edgar Meyer, Thile recorded an album in 2008 and planned to release an album with Hilary Hahn.
