Chris Botti Information
Christopher Stephen Botti (October 12, 1962) is an American trumpet player and songwriter born in Portland, Oregon. Botti spent two years of his boyhood in Italy after growing up in Corvallis. His mother was a classically educated pianist and a part-time piano instructor. She was also a major influence on his musical development.
During his final year at Indiana University, Botti dropped out to embark on a brief tour with Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich. He relocated to the Big Apple in 1985 to polish his skills as a studio musician.
Beginning in 1990, he spent the next decade traveling and recording with Paul Simon, which exposed him to various vocalists. Joni Mitchell, Natalie Merchant, Roger Daltrey, and others were among the artists he shared the stage with or recorded with at that time.
Bobby Colomby, the drummer and initial Blood, Sweat & Tears member, brought Botti to Columbia, where he eventually became the band's producer and manager. Midnight Sessions, released in 2001, was Botti's debut album for Columbia. December, a Christmas album released in 2002, included an original piece by Richard Marx.
Botti's ninth studio album, Impressions, was released on April 17, 2012. The album won the Best Pop Instrumental Album Grammy on February 10, 2013.
Featuring guest appearances from vocalists Sy Smith and Veronica Swift, and pianist Taylor Eigsti, "Great Performances: The Chris Botti Band in Concert" was published on PBS on August 18, 2018.
