Charlie Musselwhite Information
Charles Douglas Musselwhite (January 31, 1944) is an American blues harp player and singer born in Kosciusko, Mississippi. He became famous along with Mike Bloomfield, Paul Butterfield, and Elvin Bishop as one of the most important people in bringing back the Chicago Blues movement in the 1960s. A "white bluesman" is a term that has stuck with him.
Elwood Blues, portrayed by Dan Aykroyd in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers, supposedly took influence from Musselwhite. Nominated for Best Traditional Blues CD at the 2012 Grammys, Musselewhite's live CD Juke Joint Chapel was recorded at the Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale, Mississippi. On the January 2013 album Get Up!, Musselwhite collaborated with Ben Harper. It was named Best Blues Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards in January.
He was named Best Instrumentalist-Harmonist at the Blues Music Awards in 2014 and 2015. The song "No Mercy In This Land," by Musselwhite and Ben Harper, was honored with the 'Song of the Year' title at the 2019 40th Blues Music Awards.
For his 2023 album, Mississippi Son, Musselwhite took home the "Acoustic Album of the Year" trophy at the Blues Music Awards. Killers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese and set to release in 2023, features Musselwhite as Alvin Reynolds.
