Charlie Hunter Information
Charlie Hunter is an American composer, guitarist, and bandleader born on May 23, 1967, from Rhode Island. He has been around many guitarists since childhood, as his mother used to repair them for a living. He later settled in Berkeley with his mother and sister, where he attended Berkeley High School and then went to Phillips Exeter Academy, where he took lessons from rock guitarist Joe Satriani. By 18, Hunter moved to Paris but returned to San Francisco and played seven-string guitar and organ in a political group by Michael Franti named The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Hunter's music is defined as jazz, jazz fusion, acid jazz, jazz-rock, and funk.
Charlie Hunter Trio (1993) was the debut album by Hunter on which he played the seven-string guitar. It was followed by Bing, Bing, Bing! (Blue Note, 1995) in which he played an eight-string guitar custom built by Ralph Novak. He also played in the band T. J. Kirk in the 1990s. Before breaking up, the band released two albums.
Hunter was also the founder of a jazz fusion band named Garage a Trois, along with Stanton Moore and Skerik and Groundtruther with Bobby Previte. He recorded the album entitled Mistico (Fantasy, 2007). In the summer of 2007. Hunter was one of the first members of the Independent Music Awards' judging panel for the sake of supporting independent artists.
Some of the other notable studio albums by Hunter include Friends Seen and Unseen (Ropeadope, 2004), Baboon Strength (reapandsow, 2008), and Everybody Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth (GroundUP, 2016).
