Chanticleer Information
Chanticleer is a male classical vocal ensemble that is based in San Francisco, California. The group was founded on June 27, 1978, by Louis Botto. The music of the ensemble is defined as jazz, gospel, and contemporary classical, with its name being derived from the "clear singing rooster" in The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer. The members included in Chanticleer are Andy Berry, Brian Hinman, Kory Reid, Matthew Mazzola, Gerrod Pagenkopf, Matthew Knickman, Andrew Van Allsburg, and many more. Louis Botto sang with the group until 1989, and he also worked as Artistic Director until he died in 1997 from AIDS.
The music director of Chanticleer is William Fred Scott. Initially, the ensemble contained ten singers, but the number varied somewhere between eight to twelve. Currently, Chanticleer comprises twelve men that include one baritone, three tenors, two basses, and six countertenors (three altos and three sopranos).

Chanticleer won many Grammy Awards for Best Small Ensemble Performance and Best Classical Contemporary Composition. It was also named Musical America's 2008 Ensemble of the year.
