Cameo Information
Cameo is an American funk band. The group's current lineup consists of Jeff Nelson, Aaron Mills, Anthony Lockett, and Larry Blackmon. Even as late as the first half of 2009, some founding members were still playing shows together. The hip-music group Outkast brought on two more original members. Cameo's new residency show at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino was revealed in 2015 and is scheduled to debut in March of that year. The first new Cameo song in 19 years, "El Passo," was released on February 20, 2019, by the band's bassist Larry Blackmon.
Larry Blackmon's New York City Players formed in 1974, and the following year they were contracted to the Chocolate City label (a division of Casablanca Records). According to founding member Nathan Leftenant, the band initially followed "The Players." Still, it changed its name after being threatened with legal action by Mercury Records for using a name too close to that of another band, the Ohio Players, who also recorded for Mercury.
During a trip to Canada, the band members encountered a cigarette brand bearing the moniker Cameo. The ensemble East Coast featured Blackmon, Gregory Johnson on keyboards, the late Gwen Guthrie, James Wheeler on alto saxophone, Melvin Whay on bass, Michael Harris on percussion, and Haras Fyre (also known as Pat Grant) on trombone. There is only one album by them, issued by the small label Encounter in 1973 under their name.
