Bria Skonberg Information
Bria Skonberg (1983) is a Canadian jazz vocalist and trumpeter who was born in Chilliwack, British Columbia. She took piano lessons in elementary school and switched to trumpet as a teenager. Skonberg graduated from Capilano University in Vancouver in 2006, where she received a degree in jazz trumpet and studied with a fellow trumpeter, Warren Vache. Skonberg began appearing at numerous jazz festivals with The 51st Eight band. She has led the all-female Mighty Aphrodite Jazz Band as well.
Skonberg has been the leader of Bria’s Hot Five as well as The Big Bang Jazz Band. She has performed with jazz veteran Dal Richards and his Orchestra during recordings and concerts. She has appeared as a guest artist and bandleader in North America, China, Japan, Europe, mostly wherever a jazz festival was going on. Skonberg was also a co-founder of the New York Hot Jazz Festival.
Skonberg was awarded the Jazz Award of Merit in 2006 by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Kobe Jazz Street Award by Breda Jazz Festival in 2007, and Outstanding Jazz Artist by New York Bistro Award to name a few. In 2010, she relocated to New York City. Skonberg has also released a few notable albums such as Fresh (2009), So Is the Day (2012), Into Your Own (2014), Bria (2016), With a Twist (2017), and Nothing Never Happens (2019).
