Breakwater Information
Breakwater is an American funk band. The current lineup consists of Kae Williams Jr., John "Dutch" Braddock, Greg Scott, Vince Garnell, Steve Green, Lincoln 'Zay' Gilmore, James Gee Jones, and Gene Robinson. This Philadelphia-based band got its start back in 1971. Breakwater's founding members included musicians like Gene Robinson, James Gee Jones, Lincoln "Zay" Gilmore, Vince "Garnel" Dutton, Greg Scott, Steve Green, John "Dutch" Braddock, and Kae Williams, Jr. In 1978, they were signed to the Arista record label.
In 1980, they released their second studio album, Splashdown, hailed as a "funk classic" by Tom Bowker of the Broward Palm Beach New Times. Although slow jams best describe Breakwater's sound, the band has occasionally included rock and funk into their music (see: "You"). The band's sound is closest to being compared to that of Con Funk Shun or Earth, Wind & Fire, but is most known by those who aren't familiar with funk music for their hit single "Release the Beast."
The eleven-piece band, which included a four-person horn section, performed at Warmdaddy's on S. Columbus Blvd in Philadelphia on October 16, 2014. It was revealed that on January 7, 2017, the band would perform at London's Brooklyn Bowl alongside another seventies group, Baltimore's R&B funk band Pockets.
