Growing up in a musical household, Detroit native BLKBOK (real name: Charles Wilson III) began winning piano competitions at the state and university levels by age eight. Most youngsters he grew up with were into hip-hop and gave themselves rap names. Charles's choice of BLKBOK, which sounds like the initials of a legendary pianist and composer, is, of course, no accident.
As a colorful symbol of the artist's evolution from the mainstream pop and hip-hop of his early years to his critically acclaimed, neo-classical debut album, Black Book, and his many Mixtape projects and collaborations, the tag is also an accurate reflection of the elements that have contributed to his identity.
Culturally reflective and entertainment-focused, BLKBOK's live, high-energy presentation is built around a live piano as you've never seen it before. The mission of BLKBOK is to shed light on all perspectives, fostering mutual understanding via discussion and debate.
Black Book, BLKBOK's critically acclaimed debut album, was a cornerstone of the very first Juneteenth Foundation's Freedom Concert, and it was re-released in June as a DLUX Edition with two new tracks, Forgotten Girls and Kendrick + Karine, covering topical and mainstream cultural issues in BLKBOK's distinctive voice.
