Bill Frisell Information
Bill Frisell (March 18, 1951) is an American composer, arranger, and guitarist. In his youth, he had lessons from Richard Joiner, principal clarinetist of the Denver Symphony Orchestra. Still, he was more interested in playing guitar by the time he was a teenager. After finishing high school in Denver, he pursued music at the University of Northern Colorado. Frisell's duo album Reunion was published in 2000, and it featured Dale Bruning, his early guitar teacher in the Denver-Aurora area.
Frisell attended Berklee College of Music in Boston after finishing at Northern Colorado University, where he studied with Jon Damian and Jim Hall. When guitarist Pat Metheny was unable to make a recording session, Paul Motian, who was recording Psalm (1982) for ECM Records, was recommended to hire Frisell. Frisell joined ECM as their resident guitarist and went on to play on other albums for the label, including Jan Garbarek's Paths, Prints (1982).
In Line was Frisell's debut solo album, and it contained both solo guitar and guitar/bass duets with Arild Andersen. Frisell was an integral part of the New York jazz scene in the 1980s after relocating to Hoboken, New Jersey. Among the many artists he has collaborated with, he has worked closely with John Zorn from an early stage (they both played in the avant-garde jazz band Naked City). In addition, he collaborated with Joe Lovano on the saxophone in Paul Motian's trio.
