Big Sugar Information
Johnson, bassist Terry Wilkins, and drummer Al Cross formed the original Big Sugar. Still, they had been playing together for years as the backing band for Molly Johnson's jazz performances and as an ad hoc jam band with members of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir. In 1991, Johnson and his former colleagues in Infidels released their self-titled debut album on Hypnotic Records, marking Johnson's comeback to rock music.
As a guest performer, Kelly Hoppe (a.k.a. Mr. Chill) played harmonica and tenor saxophone on Big Sugar's album Five Hundred Pounds. Hoppe gave Johnson his first job as a musician, and the two had been friends for a long time. Five Hundred Pounds, Big Sugar's 1993 album, received no promotion or radio play but sold 10,000 copies in Canada thanks to the band's energetic performances.
In 1995, Johnson collaborated with Tyler Stewart of the Barenaked Ladies and Chris Brown of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir on an album titled Don't Talk Dance. Big Sugar released two E.P.s 1995 called Dear M.F. and Ride Like Hell. Dear M.F. included a cover of "Dear Mr. Fantasy" by Traffic. Lloyd 'Mojah' Benn joined Big Sugar as the band's rhythm guitarist in 1999. Opening for The Rolling Stones at the Air Canada Centre in February, they went on to play at Woodstock 1999 in July.
