A large band, sometimes known as a jazz orchestra, is a group of musicians who play jazz music. They typically include four sections: a rhythm section, saxophones, trumpets, and trombones. The early 1910s saw the formation of big bands, which dominated jazz during the height of swing in the early 1940s. Although this was not the only musical genre that big bands played, the phrase "big band" is also used to describe it.
Big bands first evolved as a dancing accompaniment. Big bands tended to rely on pre-written tunes and orchestration, in contrast to the traditional jazz emphasis on improvisation. Instead of emphasizing soloists, they gave more credit to band directors, arrangers, and groups of instruments. Before 1910, steps like the waltz and polka dominated social dancing in America. Energizing, suggestive dances followed jazz as it moved from its New Orleans birthplace to Chicago and New York City. Over the following decades, jitterbug and Lindy Hop dancing were popular in ballrooms.
Art Hickman, a drummer, led one of the first ensembles in San Francisco to play along with the fresh beats in 1916. Ferde Grofé, Hickman's arranger, created arrangements in which he segmented the jazz orchestra into groups that could be combined in different ways. This blending of the sections evolved into a big band trademark. Paul Whiteman engaged Grofé in 1919 to apply comparable methods for his band. Whiteman, a classically trained musician, referred to the music of his new ensemble as symphonic jazz.
