Bettye Lavette Information
Bettye LaVette (January 29, 1946) was born as Betty Jo Haskins and is an American soul singer-songwriter from Muskegon, Michigan. She plays soul, blues, funk, rock, country, Americana, gospel, and R&B. LaVette was raised in Detroit and began singing in her parents' living room. At 16, she was signed by Johnnie Mae Matthews, a local record producer, and recorded a single, "My Man — He's a Lovin' Man" with him.
Bettye LaVette started her official career when Atlantic Records picked her up, and her record became a major R&B hit over the fall and winter of 1963. She toured with Atlantic Records R&B hitmakers as Ben E. King, Barbara Lynn, Clyde McPhatter, and then-rising star Otis Redding. Some of the initial songs released by LaVette are "Let Me Down Easy," "My Man - He's a Lovin' Man" / "Shut Your Mouth," "You'll Never Change," and "You Killed the Love."
Some of the notable studio albums released by LaVette include Tell Me a Lie, Not Gonna Happen Twice, A Woman Like Me, I've Got My Own Hell to Raise, The Scene of the Crime, A Change is Gonna Come Sessions, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, and Thankful N' Thoughtful. She also released a few compilations: The Very Best of the Motor City Recordings, Let Me Down Easy In Concert, and Do Your Duty: The Complete Silver Fox/SSS Recordings. A Woman Like Me is the only bibliography by Bettye Lavette with David Ritz in 2012.
