Berlioz Information
The program symphony Symphonie fantastique: Épisode de la vie d'un artiste... in cinq parties, Op. 14 by the French composer Hector Berlioz was first performed in 1830. It's a crucial piece of Romantic-era literature. On December 5th, 1830, it premiered at the Paris Conservatoire. Franz Liszt transcribed the 1833 symphony on piano (S. 470).
Leonard Bernstein, an American composer, and conductor, called the symphony the first musical adventure into psychedelia due to its hallucinogenic and dream-like qualities.
Berlioz poured his heart and soul into the composition, touching on every possible feeling. Because his goals inspired each section and the narrative he affixed to the various sections, he felt it was important for others to comprehend them. Berlioz once observed, "For this reason, I generally find it quite hard to hear my pieces conducted by someone other than myself." Lélio, written by Berlioz in 1831 for actors, soloists, chorus, piano, and orchestra, is a lesser-known sequel to the masterpiece.
