Berlin Philharmonic Information
The Berlin Philharmonic is a German orchestra that is originally based in Berlin. Fifty-four musicians founded the orchestra under the name Frühere Bilsesche Kapelle in 1882. The former name means "Former Bilse's Band." The ensemble split from the past conductor Benjamin Bilse. The split took place because he announced to take the orchestra to Warsaw for a concert via fourth-class train. The Berlin Philharmonic then got renamed. It was completely reorganized in 1882, under the financial management of Hermann Wolff. Ludwig von Brenner was the new conductor of the orchestra. Hans von Bülow, the conductor of the Meiningen Court Orchestra and the most famous piano virtuosos of that era, took the conductor's spot in 1887.
With such drastic changes, the Berlin Philharmonic established a reputable international image. Over the next few years, some guest conductors joined the orchestra, such as Felix von Weingartner, Richard Strauss, Hans Richter, Gustav Mahler, Edvard Grieg, and others. Mary Wurm was the very first woman to conduct the orchestra. The Berlin Philharmonic announced an official digital concert hall on December 18, 2008. This unique internet platform allowed people to have access worldwide through their computers. They were allowed to see, hear, and enjoy concerts by the Philharmonic or even demand a live show. The Digital Concert Hall has additionally offered live streams since July 2014. These are produced from HD movies of concerts in the 1960s and early 1970s by Herbert von Karajan.
