Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Information
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra has its principal residence at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall under the music director, Marin Alsop, since 2007. While the company performs more than 130 concerts a year at Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the orchestra also began performing regularly at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda in 2005.
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1916 and is the only major American orchestra originally established as a branch of the municipal government. The company was reorganized as a private institution in 1942, although the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra maintains close relationships with the city and the governments.
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra has had several broadcasts since its inception. It is broadcasted by XM Satellite Radio, iTunes Clueless About Classical, NPR’s “Weekend Edition” with Scott Simon, NPR’s Performance Today, and American Public Media’s Symphony Cast.
