Applachain Spring Information

Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, an orchestral suite, was first performed in 1944 and has since gained broad and enduring popularity, composed for a chamber orchestra of thirteen players with funding from the Coolidge Foundation at the request of choreographer and performer Martha Graham.

On October 30, 1944, Martha Graham made the dance its world debut at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. US-based sculptor Isamu Noguchi created the set. In 1945, the Pulitzer Prize in Music was bestowed upon Copland. The tale takes place in the spring of the 19th century after a group of American pioneers in Pennsylvania finished constructing a new farmhouse.

There is a bride, a groom, a pioneer lady, a preacher, and his congregation, who all play significant roles. The Los Angeles Times gives a synopsis of the plot in the pauses between the choreographed scenes. For a long time, CBS Reports' introductory theme was taken from the seventh movement of the orchestral suite.
