Anthony de Mare is widely regarded as a leading advocate for modern music. She has been directly responsible for creating dozens of pieces by some of the most accomplished musicians working today. In his latest endeavor, Liaisons: Re-Imagining Sondheim from the Piano, he has assembled a group of 36 of today's most esteemed composers to bring the music of musical theater maestro Stephen Sondheim into the concert hall, drawing from the classical, contemporary, jazz, film, theater and pop genres.
Currently included on Yamaha's list of artists, he has received praise for his "muscularly virtuoso, remarkably uninhibited performance" and "exceptional talents" (Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times). De Mare gave his solo Carnegie Hall debut at Zankel Hall under the auspices of Young Concert Artists after winning first prize and audience prize at the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition (The Netherlands) and the International Competition of Contemporary Piano Music (France).
Mr. de Mare has nearly twenty recordings in his discography, including SPEAK! The Speaking-Singing Pianist (2010) on Innova, the first disc devoted entirely to the genre he created over twenty years ago; Out of My Hands (2005) on KOCH Entertainment, which was nominated for a Grammy; and Wizards and Wildmen (2000) on CRI / New World, which was named one of the Ten Best Releases of 2000 by American Record Guide. His other well-received albums include Pianos and Voices: Music by John Cage and Meredith Monk, Frederic Rzewski - Anthony de Mare (O.O. Discs), and Oblivion (Koch).
