Alisa Weilerstein Information
Alisa Weilerstein is a classical cellist from Rochester, New York. She began playing the cello at the age of four. At the age of 13, Weilerstein debuted with the Cleveland Orchestra, where she played Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme. She was named a 2011 MacArthur Fellow for her talent.
As a soloist, Weilerstein has performed with several other major and well-known orchestras on four continents. She is also an active part of chamber music and performs with her parents, pianist Vivian Hornik Weilerstein and violinist Donald Weilerstein. The three performed as the Weilerstein Trio, and the trio currently resides at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Alisa’s brother is also the violinist and conductor, Joshua Weilerstein born in 1987.
Weilerstein has received several honors, and she won an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2000-20001. She was even selected to play in the ECHO "Rising Stars" program and Chamber Music Society II. She graduated in 2004 from Columbia University in New York City and earned a BA in Russian history. After a couple of years, she earned the Leonard Bernstein Prize at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 2006, and in 2011, she received a MacArthur Foundation title "genius grant."
Weilerstein has worked extensively with composers Lera Auerbach and Osvaldo Golijov, along with Philadelphia composer Joseph Hallman. Some of her notable discographies include Bach Cello Suites, Old Souls - Chamber Music for Flute and Strings, Transfigured Night, and Joseph Hallman: Cello Concerto (St. Petersburg).
