Alcee Chriss Information
Alcée Chriss III is a jazz and gospel-influenced American organist, songwriter, and conductor based in Dallas, Texas. Chriss's father was a United Methodist pastor, and the family settled in Dallas, Texas. He grew up listening to religious music and playing the piano, where he studied classical and jazz styles before switching to the organ.
He became fascinated with the instrument after seeing Catharine Crozier play it on the Hour of Power. His childhood churches didn't have organs, so he sought out area organists in the hopes that one of them would take him on as a student. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in organ performance from Oberlin Conservatory and his musical doctorate from McGill University, where he trained with Hans-Ola Ericsson.
To prepare for the 2019 Canadian International Organ Competition, Chriss was featured in Stacey Tenenbaum's documentary Pipe Dreams alongside Yuan Shen, Thomas Gaynor, Nick Cappozoli, and Sebastian Heindl.
