Colorado Symphony Orchestra Information
The Colorado Symphony is a classical orchestra based in the United States. Soon after the Denver Symphony canceled the rest of its 1988-1989 season due to financial difficulties, the Colorado Symphony was founded as its successor. The Colorado Symphony was established in August 1989 when percussionist Terry Smith and former principal bassoonist John Wetherill submitted articles of organization to the Secretary of State of Colorado.
In September 2012, Andrew Litton signed a deal to serve as artistic advisor to the orchestra through the 2014–2015 season. Litton was promoted to Music Director of the orchestra in August 2013. After the 2015-2016 season, the orchestra announced in September 2015 that Litton stepped aside from his music director position instead of serving as artistic advisor and chief guest conductor through the 2017-2018 season. The orchestra's debut recording was of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with Litton at the helm, and it was released on the orchestra's label.
Guest conducting for the first time in July of 2016 was Brett Mitchell. After seeing Mitchell perform, the orchestra quickly made him its next music director in September 2016, giving him a 4-year contract to start in the 2017-2018 season. The 2016–2017 season was his first as music director. Jerome "Jerry" Kern, the CEO and Board Chairman of the Symphony for the past two decades, retired on September 9, 2021. On February 15, 2022, Peter Oundjian was named the orchestra's new principal conductor.
