Albert Cano Smit Information
Albert Cano Smit (October 4, 1996) is a Spanish-Dutch classical pianist. He was born in Geneva, Switzerland. Cano Smit's first professor in higher education was Ory Shihor, who he studied under at Los Angeles' Colburn Conservatory of Music. The next year, he was awarded the Arthur Rubinstein Prize in Piano and enrolled as a graduate student at New York's Juilliard School to study with Robert McDonald. Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Richard Goode, and Stephen Hough are other noteworthy examples of influential mentors.
Cano Smit gained recognition after being a finalist at the 2017 Montreal International Piano Competition. As a result of his performances, he was called "a great talent in the making" who had "almost near-suicided" himself by choosing a difficult concerto for his final performance. At the 2017 Naumburg International Piano Competition, he took home his first big competition victory. In November 2019, he took home six special prizes in the Young Concert Artists Competition, making this his second major competition victory.
He has performed as a concerto soloist with the likes of the Boca del Ro Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Barcelona Symphony, Catalonia National Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, and the Las Vegas Philharmonic. He debuted there in October 2019, giving the world premiere of Stephen Hough's Partita for Piano, written especially for him by the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation.
