Alan Gilbert Information
Alan Gilbert (February 23, 1967) is an American violinist and conductor. He was born in Upper West Side, Manhattan. He took up the violin, viola, and piano when he was young. Jennifer Gilbert, his sister, also took up the instrument and went on to a successful career in music. Gilbert attended Harvard University in the 1980s and served as its music director for the Harvard Bach Society Orchestra in 1988 and 1989. Gilbert also took classes at the New England Conservatory of Music with renowned violinist Masuko Ushioda during his time in Boston.
After graduating from Harvard, Gilbert attended the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School of Music to study conducting with Otto-Werner Mueller. He received a week of private lessons from Maestro Solti after winning the 1994 Georg Solti Prize. The International Competition for Musical Performance was held in Geneva in 1994, and Gilbert took first place there as well.
Gilbert made his name as a conductor mostly via his work with modern and American music; his appointment to the New York Philharmonic was seen as a departure from the more traditional approaches of Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, and Zubin Mehta. Gilbert made his Royal Swedish Opera conducting debut that same year (2012). The Royal Swedish Opera confirmed Gilbert's appointment as its next music director in January 2020, with his tenure beginning in the spring of 2021.
