Albert Laurence Di Meola (July 22, 1954) is an American guitar player. He got his start in the industry in 1974 as a guitarist for the band Return to Forever, and he is now famous for his world music and jazz fusion compositions. He recorded three albums with Stomu Yamashta's ensemble Go from 1976 to 1978. Land of the Midnight Sun, Elegant Gypsy, Casino, and Friday Night in San Francisco were some of his critically and commercially successful albums from the 1970s and 1980s.
Land of the Midnight Sun, Di Meola's debut solo album, showcases his early technical prowess and compositional complexity through lightning-fast guitar solos. However, he had already started delving into Mediterranean cultures and acoustic styles like flamenco in his debut recordings.
Di Meola started using the Synclavier guitar synthesizer in his music in the middle of the 1980s. Over the following two decades, he primarily focused on acoustic and world music, with a few electric guitar appearances on albums like Kiss My Axe (1991). The DVD of his performance at the Leverkusen Jazz Festival 2006 features a caption "Return to Electric Guitar," indicating that he rediscovered his passion for electric guitar in 2006.
