A professional orchestra with its home base in Akron, Ohio, is the Akron Symphony Orchestra. In 1949, the ASO was established. The ASO named Christopher Wilkins their music director, in 2006. Through 2021, Wilkins has committed to continue as director. The Akron Symphony Orchestra has been a vital musical force in the Greater Akron region for more than 60 years. The Akron Symphony Orchestra, well-known for its musical prowess and diversity on stage, is dedicated to improving our community's quality of life through educational and artistic excellence.
The Greater Akron Musical Association, Inc. manages the Akron Symphony Orchestra (GAMA). The goal of GAMA is to be recognized and preserved as a valuable resource for the neighborhood that offers a friendly setting for everyone to enjoy excellent music. Operating the Akron Symphony Orchestra, Akron Youth Orchestras, Akron Symphony Chorus, and several unique outreach and educational activities help to fulfill this mission.
