Afghan Whigs Information
The Afghan Whigs is an American rock band. The current group lineup consists of Christopher Thorn, Patrick Keeler, Rick G. Nelson, John Curley, and Greg Dulli. The Afghan Whigs were a band that Curley joined that originated from Dulli's prior group, The Black Republicans. Curley would introduce Dulli to McCollum, a regular jam partner known for his ground-breaking use of effects pedals in the Cincinnati music community. McCollum and Dulli became fast friends over their mutual appreciation of R&B; in fact, the first song the Afghan Whigs ever practiced was a rendition of "Psychedelic Shack" by The Temptations.
After the dissolution of The Black Republicans, Dulli relocated to Arizona, where he wrote most of the songs that would eventually appear on The Afghan Whigs' debut album, Big Top Halloween (1988), issued independently on the band's Ultrasuede label. The Afghan Whigs were the second band to contract with Sub Pop, who was not from the Pacific Northwest.
Up in It, the second album by The Afghan Whigs, was released in 1990 by Sub Pop. Up in It, largely recorded by Nirvana producer Jack Endino and features the college radio hit "Retarded," was well received by music reviewers upon its release. The Afghan Whigs went on a tour supporting the record alongside pioneers of the grunge genre Mudhoney and Boston's underground scene Bullet LaVolta.
