A Rhapsody In Gershwin Information

Rhapsody in Blue is a musical composition from 1924 for solo piano and jazz band that combines classical music with jazz-inspired effects. Written by George Gershwin and commissioned by bandleader Paul Whiteman, the piece was first presented in Aeolian Hall, New York City, on February 12, 1924. Gershwin, on the piano, led Whiteman's band in the rhapsody.

Several times including the 1924 original score, the 1926 pit orchestra score, and the 1942 symphonic score, Whiteman's arranger Ferde Grofé conducted the rhapsody. Among Gershwin's most identifiable works and a fundamental composition defining the Jazz Age is the rhapsody. Beginning a new chapter in American musical history, Gershwin's work established his reputation as a great composer and rose to become among the most often performed concert pieces.

According to Frederic D. Schwarz in the American Heritage magazine, concert audiences now instantly identify the renowned opening clarinet glissando with the opening of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. One hundred years after its 1924 debut, tens of thousands of orchestras and solo pianists have recorded Gershwin's rhapsody abridged and unbroken. Critics have lauded many of these recordings, including pianist Michel Camilo's 2006 Latin Grammy win.
