The Wizard of Oz is a musical adaption by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Jeremy Sams, based on the 1939 film of the same name, originally adapted from L. Frank Baum's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The musical has songs written by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg for the film, new songs written by Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, and additional lyrics and music. This stage musical follows two previous adaptations—one for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987 and another for the St. Louis Municipal Opera (The Muny)—and is based on the film from 1942.
Baum first adapted The Wizard of Oz for the stage. After a successful run in Chicago in 1902, the rough version of his 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was transferred to Broadway the following year. Not only does the program not contain the Wicked Witch or Toto, but it also introduces new characters. After that, it went on a nine-year tour.
Aston Merrygold stars as the Tin Man, Craig Revel Horwood as the Wicked Witch, and Wilmot returns as the Wizard. The tour of the UK and Ireland will begin at the Liverpool Empire Theatre on December 13, 2023, and continue until August 20, 2024.
