Tootsie - Musical Information
Tootsie is a musical comedy written by Robert Horn, featuring music and lyrics by David Yazbek. The screenplay for the musical was written by Larry Gelbart, Barry Levinson, Elaine May, and Murray Schisgal. It is based on a plot by Gelbart and Don McGuire. The original film was released in 1982.
In September 2018, the musical had its first public tryout at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre. The musical follows a similar plot to the film, which centers on a skilled but unstable actor who must disguise himself as a woman to get work. The film's plot centered on a daytime soap opera, whereas the show's plot centers on a musical on Broadway.
The March 29 preview performance of the Marquis Theatre's 2019 Broadway play was followed by the April 23 official opening. After 293 regular performances and 25 previews, the show ended on January 5, 2020.
As of May 16, 2019, a Non-Equity US national tour was set to begin at New York's Shea's Buffalo Theatre in 2020. A West End production was also scheduled to debut the following year. Last but not least, it was revealed that more presentations will occur in New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. The specific dates of these shows, as well as the casts, will be disclosed at a later time.
