The Nutty Professor is an American science fiction comedy with three feature films: a direct-to-video sequel, a musical stage play, and a forthcoming reboot. Inspired by The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde but otherwise a unique work by Jerry Lewis.
Each film follows a protagonist with genius-level intelligence but is socially awkward and nerdy. When these men encounter lovely ladies, they get the idea to create potions that will temporarily allow them to assume the identities of their newfound conquests. Self-worth is a central theme of the show.
The original movie was a commercial and critical hit, so it's no surprise that it's now considered a comedy classic. The American Film Institute placed it at 99 on their 100 Years...100 Laughs list. In 2008, a sequel was published. However, it was an animated direct-to-video sequel. Lewis was back in the film, albeit this time, his grandson got most of the screen time.
A new installment in The Nutty Professor franchise was announced in August 2020. Producers James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, and Paul Neinstein always seek new and exciting talent. Project X Entertainment is currently producing the film.
