The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a musical based on Victor Hugo's 1831 novel of the same name, with music from Walt Disney Animation Studios' 1996 film version. The world premiere of the original musical, The Bellringer of Notre Dame, occurred in Berlin, Germany 1999. It was Disney Theatrical Productions' first musical to premiere in a country other than the US. It was one of the longest-running musicals in Berlin, playing for three years.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a musical in English with a rewritten text, premiered on October 28. It lasted through December 7 at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California. There were more adjustments to the libretto before the production opened on March 4, 2015, at the Paper Mill Playhouse, a top location in Millburn, New Jersey. After it was announced that the musical would not transfer to Broadway, it closed on April 5, 2015.
A new German version of the musical premiered in April 2017 at Berlin's Theater des Westens. The musical opened in Berlin ran its course and then traveled to Munich and Stuttgart. The National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) staged the musical's world premiere at Manchester Cathedral in 2021.
In 2023, Captivate Theatre presented the performance at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as the first Scottish production of the show. The musical hasn't been performed on Broadway because of union rules prohibiting the presence of a choir. Also, Disney makes more money from licensing the show to regional theaters.
