Priscilla Queen of the Desert Information
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, is a jukebox musical with a text by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, an Australian film director-writer, and a score composed of well-known pop songs. The musical depicts the narrative of two drag queens and a trans woman who contract to perform a drag performance at a resort in Alice Springs, a tourist town in the isolated Australian desert, based on Elliott's 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. On September 29, 2007, a cast recording of the original Australian production was released in stores and iTunes in Australia.
The Simon Phillips-directed and Ross Coleman-choreographed original production of Priscilla, produced by Allan Scott in collaboration with Back Row Productions, Michael Chugg, Michael Hamlyn, and John Frost, premiered in Australia at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney in October 2006.
Following a successful run in Sydney, the production moved to Melbourne in 2007 and then to Auckland, New Zealand in 2008, before returning to Sydney for a short run. The first UK tour began on February 9, 2013, at Manchester's Opera House and ended at Plymouth's Theatre Royal on April 12, 2014.
In addition to its Bette Midler-produced Broadway debut in 2011, Priscilla's success in Australia prompted a two-year West End run. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical and two Tony Awards, winning both for costume design.
