Nine Information
Nine is a musical featuring Maury Yeston's music and lyrics, together with an Arthur Kopit book. Based on the venerable 1963 film 8½, it debuted on Broadway in 1982. Dealing with writer's block, Guido must negotiate his complicated relationships with several women in his life—including his wife, mistress, inspiration, and mother—all the while trying to save his career and personal life.
Tommy Tune oversaw Nine's original Broadway production, which starred Raúl Juliá as Guido. With five Tony Awards—including Best Musical—it was both a commercial and critical triumph. Rich on tunes like "Be Italian," "My Husband Makes Movies," and "Unusual Way," the musical is known for its score. Nine's almost entirely female ensemble is noteworthy; Guido is the only significant male character in the work.
Nine has been revived several times, most famously a 2003 Broadway production with Antonio Banderas as Guido that also won a Tony Award. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Rob Marshall oversaw the 2009 film adaptation of the musical, although the film received mixed reviews relative to the original stage production.
