Mrs. Doubtfire is a musical based on the 1993 film. The real film was based on the 1987 novel Alias Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine. The musical has music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Karey Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell wrote the book. San Francisco, California, is the location of the musical's action.
In 2015, Harvey Fierstein (who portrayed Frank Hillard in the film) and Alan Menken (who composed the score) collaborated on a musical adaptation of Mrs. Doubtfire. In an interview with The New York Times, published in 2013, producer Kevin McCollum discussed the potential for a musical adaptation of the 1993 film. He said that the story was "tailored for Broadway audiences."
McCollum said 2018 that the adaptation was still on track for a Broadway debut with a new creative team. A Tony Award winner, Jerry Zaks, was hired to helm the production. The musical's move to London's Shaftesbury Theatre, with an official opening date of May 12, 2023, was announced on November 15, 2022.
Previews began on May 12, 2023, with the Gala Performance on June 18, 2023. Gabriel Vick plays the main character, while the cast also features Laura Tebbutt as Miranda, Carla Dixon Hernandez as Lydia, Samuel Edwards as Stuart, Cameron Blakely as Frank, and Marcus Collins as André. At its opening, the show was praised by critics.
