Howard Ashman wrote the script and composed the music for the horror comic rock musical Little Shop of Horrors, with lyrics and music by Alan Menken. A flower shop worker goes on an unfortunate journey as she tends to a plant that thrives on human flesh and blood.
A low-budget black comedy from 1960 called The Little Shop of Horrors is the loose inspiration for the musical. Included in the score by Alan Menken in the manner of early Motown, rock & roll, and doo-wop, including the title track, "Skid Row (Downtown)," "Somewhere That's Green," and "Suddenly, Seymour" are several popular songs.
After its 1982 off-Broadway opening, the musical had a five-year run at the Orpheum Theatre off-Broadway. A subsequent Broadway production was one of many that followed, both domestically and internationally. Community theater, schools, and other amateur groups have succeeded with it, partly because of its tiny cast. Frank Oz also helmed the 1986 film adaptation of the musical.
