The music and lyrics for La Cage aux Folles are by Jerry Herman, while the book is by Harvey Fierstein. The film is based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret, which follows the comedic exploits of a gay couple—Georges, the manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and Albin, his romantic partner and star attraction—when Georges's son, Jean-Michel, brings home his fiancée's ultra-conservative parents to meet them.
'La cage aux follies translates to 'the cage of mad women. Folles, however, is also slang for effeminate homosexuals (queens). When it premiered in 1983, La Cage was the first successful Broadway musical about a homosexual couple. Act One, closer to "I Am What I Am," has been frequently recorded due to its acclaim as a "gay anthem" for the production.
More than four years and 1,762 performances later, the original production received six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book. A West End production and other overseas performances followed the musical's triumph. Having already won the Tony Award for Best Revival on Broadway in 2004, this production also took home the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival in London in 2008.
