Bella and Samuel Spewack wrote the musical Kiss Me, Kate, which features Cole Porter's music and lyrics. The plot revolves around the development of a musical adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew and the conflict between Fred Graham, the show's director, producer, and star, and his leading lady, his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi, on and offstage.
Lois Lane, who plays Bianca, has a secondary affair with Bill, a gambler who gets in trouble with some gangsters. Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison, Lisa Kirk, and Harold Lang starred in the original production.
Kiss Me, Kate was Porter's answer to Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! and other integrated musicals. It was the first production he composed in which the music and lyrics were inextricably linked to the story. The musical premiered in 1948 and became Porter's only Broadway piece running for over 1,000 performances. It earned the first Tony Award for Best Musical in 1949.
In 1953, a film adaptation of Kiss Me, Kate was also made. At least four television productions have been made, the first in 1958 on Hallmark Hall of Fame with Drake and Morison reprising their Broadway roles, the second in 1964 for the launch of BBC Two in the UK, starring Howard Keel, Patricia Morison, and Millicent Martin. The third was in 1968 with then-husband-and-wife team Robert Goulet and Carol Lawrence. The most recent was released in 2003 on Great Performances, a high-definition shot performance of the London revival with Bret Easton.
