The 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls follows the lives of three young African American women who became famous after forming a singing group. When the Dreamettes—Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorell Robinson—lost a talent competition in 1962, they met Curtis Taylor, Jr., who would later become their manager.
From their humble beginnings as an R&B singer's backing vocalists, the Dreamettes finally succeeded as a solo act. Personal issues arise when Lorell has an affair with a married man, and Curtis begins dating Effie, who is replaced as the group's main singer.
The Dreams overcome obstacles such as envy and fight to become the most popular girl group in the nation. Throughout this journey, each group member has her own unique set of struggles. Since its premiere, Dreamgirls has received thirteen Tony Award nominations, six of which were for Best Musical. The fact that it was made into a film in 2006 shows that some stories stand the test of time.
