Buena Vista Social Club - Musical Information
Cuban musicians joined in 1996 to establish the Buena Vista Social Club musical band. World Circuit executive Nick Gold oversaw production, American guitarist Ry Cooder served as producer, and Juan de Marcos González served as director. A popular music venue in Havana's Buenavista neighborhood in the 1940s, the members' club of the same name inspired the group's name. Recorded in March 1996 and released in September 1997, the group's self-titled studio album became an instant hit worldwide. In 1998, the ensemble expanded their performance to include a full lineup in New York and Amsterdam concerts.
German filmmaker Wim Wenders recorded the concert for his documentary Buena Vista Social Club, which also featured interviews with the musicians recorded in Havana. After its June 1999 premiere, Wenders' film garnered critical praise and won several awards, including Best Documentary at the European Film Awards and an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature. Buena Vista Social Club: Adios, the sequel, came out in 2017.
With new members like singer Carlos Calunga and pianist Rolando Luna, the 13-piece band known as Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club is touring the globe. Among the surviving members of the band are tresero Eliades Ochoa, veteran singer Omara Portuondo, trumpeter Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabal, laúd player Barbarito Torres, and trombonist and conductor Jesús "Aguaje" Ramos.
