Jukebox musical Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, with a book by Douglas McGrath, tells the story of Carole King's early life. And his career through a selection of songs by King and Gerry Goffin and other contemporary songs by Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Phil Spector, and others.
Jessie Mueller won a Tony Award for her portrayal of King, and Jake Epstein, who played Goffin, starred in the original production of Beautiful. The show had its world premiere at the Curran Theatre in October 2013. It opened at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Broadway in January 2014. In February 2015, Katie Brayben took on the lead role of Carole in a production on London's West End.
On February 28, 2022, the Curve Theatre in Leicester hosted the opening night of a third UK tour. Molly-Grace Cutler (The Worst Witch) plays Carole King, and Tom Milner (Holby City) plays Gerry Goffin in a musical co-produced by Made at Curve and Mayflower Southampton. Seren Sandham-Davies and Jos Slovick play husband-and-wife songwriters Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann.
Cast as Carole King, Cynthia Weil, Gerry Goffin, Genie Klein, Barry Mann, and Don Kirschner, the 2023 production featured Carol Anne Hartman, Holley Dagenhardt, Corey Knighton, Lucas DeVore, and Mark Rose. Jeff Hartman directed the musical score, while Gina Duckworth was responsible for choreography.
